چکیده

5 A striking cross-linguistic generalisation about the semantics of determiners is 6 that they never express nonconservative relations. To account for this one might hy7 pothesise that the mechanisms underlying human language acquisition are unsuited 8 to nonconservative determiner meanings. We present experimental evidence that 9 fourand five-year-olds fail to learn a novel nonconservative determiner but succeed 10 in learning a comparable conservative determiner, consistent with the learnability 11 hypothesis. 12

Universals on natural language determiners from a PAC-learnability perspective

A classical conjecture in generative linguistics is that universal restrictions on determiners in Natural Language (e.g. monotonicity, invariance, and conservativity) serve the purpose of simplifying the language acquisition task. This paper formalizes this conjecture within the PAC-learnability framework.

Dutch Children’s Interpretation of Quantificational Determiners: Must the Universal Property of Conservativity Be Learned?

Conservativity has been proposed as a universal property of natural language determiners, so it is possible that children apply it to quantifier interpretations from a young age. Using a picture verification task and sentences using the conservative determiner al (all) and the non-conservative quantificational adverb alleen (only), we tested whether or not children interpreted quantifiers conse...

Prospects for a Syntactic Analysis of Conservativity

The model theoretic tradition in semantic analysis maintains that determiners denote functions from properties to sets of properties, where in an extensional model a property is a set of individuals. For a determiner d and properties p and q I write ‘d(p,q)’ for ‘[d(p)](q)’ and refer to p as d’s ‘restrictor’ and to q as its ‘nuclear scope’. Barwise and Cooper (1981) and Keenan and Stavi (1986) ...

Some (but not all) unattested determiners are unlearnable

A striking cross-linguistic generalisation about the semantics of determiners is that they never express nonconservative relations. To account for this one might hypothesise that the mechanisms underlying human language acquisition are not compatible with nonconservative determiner meanings. We stress that the crosslinguistic generalisation alone should not be taken as decisive evidence for thi...

Constraints on anaphoric functions

Some constraints on functions from sets and relations to sets are studied. Such constraints are satisfied by anaphoric functions, that is functions denoted by anaphoric determiners. These constraints are generalisations of anaphor conditions known from the study of simpler cases of nominal anaphors. In addition a generalisation of the notion of conservativity as applied to anaphoric functions i...
